Shoulder Replacement Surgery Without Opening the Shoulder Joint
If you have a damaged shoulder joint, your surgeon can repair the damaged structures and restore your shoulder to good function. In many cases, this can be done without opening the shoulder joint and with fewer complications. A highly-skilled surgeon familiar with the anatomy of your shoulder joint and skilled with specially designed arthroscopic instruments and implants can address most problems without the need for large incisions.어깨필러
The shoulder joint is a ball and socket joint, where the round end of your upper arm bone (humerus) fits into the curved portion on the outside of your shoulder blade (scapula). Ligaments and tendons connect the bones together, while cartilage helps prevent the bones from rubbing against each other. When a bone in your shoulder becomes deformed or worn out, it can cause pain and limit movement. Shoulder replacement surgery replaces the damaged parts of your shoulder joint with precision engineered metal and plastic implants to provide pain relief and improved mobility.
During surgery, you will be under general anesthesia. Before going into the operating room, nurses will take your blood pressure and pulse and put an IV line in for fluids, medication and antibiotics.
Your surgeon will make one or two small incisions, called portals, in front of your shoulder, and through these, insert a camera to visualize the inside of the joint. Specially-designed instruments are also placed through the portals to correct the problem. Your surgeon will watch the live images on a monitor to assess the condition of the ligaments, cartilage and bone.
Once the damaged tissues are removed, the surgeon can re-align the shoulder joint and close any incisions with sutures. To further reduce the impingement, your surgeon may choose to perform an arthroscopic procedure called acromioplasty. This technique removes a bony roof over the shoulder joint, called the acromion, which often rubs against the repaired rotator cuff.
Your recovery from surgery will be faster if you avoid positions that stretch your shoulder beyond its range of motion. Your doctor will place your shoulder in a sling to protect the surgical site and help you move your shoulder in its proper position for healing.
Most patients feel immediate improvement in their shoulder movements and less pain after surgery. Physical therapy is recommended to restore your range of motion and strengthen your shoulder.
The shoulder is a complex and delicate joint, and the success of any surgical treatment depends on several factors, including your age, your overall health, and the severity of your problem. You and your surgeon must agree on a realistic goal for recovery, taking into account how much you will be able to do with your shoulder in the future.닥터케빈의원
